Happy New Year, everyone; at least, those of us on solar calendars. And even then, as our ancestors knew, the real date is March 25, because that’s when the spring starts and we remember the fall of Sauron ( Lord of the Rings anyone?). You can blame the old new year, by the way, on the fact that the British government of 1752 didn’t want to lose 11 days of tax revenue when switching calendars, which is why the fiscal year starts on April 6. Who says you never learn anything from this column? That’ll be a quiz question soon and then you’ll be thankful.

Hollywood, eh: who needs it when you’ve got Vincent Qi living in your city? Two years ago the man was a player – in every sense of the word – on the city’s pick-up artist (PUA) circuit. Calling himself the ‘Lady Whisperer’, Qi taught would-be studs how to hook women and claims, at his peak, to have met, seduced and slept with ten ladies in a few weeks, while meeting fi ve-to-ten others that he’d landed previously. But now, in true rom-com fashion, Qi’s embraced romantic monogamy and given up the whole PUA game. It’s not something he regrets. Read more

Tears are still being shed across town for the closure of D-22 in early January. For the past six years, the Wudaokou club has been a second home to the city’s punk, noise-rock and experimental music scenes. But don’t worry, the club’s new space around Xinjiekou area is expected to open this summer. However, the word is that it will be more geared towards the experimental music crowd and other art-related activities. So where will all the punks and rockers go? Old What Bar (an even smaller venue) has played host to a number of D-22 regulars over the past few months, but whatever the outcome, this is truly the end of an era. Read more

During my first year in Beijing, myself and a friend found work as topless bartenders in a club near Sanlitun. It was running a regular ‘ladies night’ and we were featured as part of the stage show.
Best known as simply one of the quickest ways to get plastered, the Long Island iced tea has long been a subject of scorn for mixologists the world over, largely thanks to its use of pretty much every house liquor behind the bar. The drink is said to have been created in the mid-1970s by Robert Butt, the bartender at the Oak Beach Inn on New York state’s Long Island. Another story, however, claims that it was actually invented in the ’20s in a community called Long Island in Kingsport, Tennessee, and then later perfected in the ’40s by another local chap called Random Bishop (how random!). Whether true or not, this drink has certainly entered popular culture at full speed, becoming a dear friend to poor students wanting to get hammered and housewives of the desperate variety alike. The cocktail was the brainchild of Catholic priest Canon Felix Kir, a hero in the French Resistance and a much-revered local personality. When off duty, Canon Felix was an enthusiastic promoter of his region’s produce, and it was through the serendipitous mixing of local blackcurrant liqueur crème de cassis and white wine made from the dry white Aligoté grape that he created Kir. It wasn’t long before the cocktail’s fame spread not just across Burgundy, but all over France, where different regional wines were added to create new varieties. One day, some unknown genius decided to use champagne instead of white wine and the Kir Royale (pictured below) was born. Read more

Professor Daniel A Bell, who is presenting a talk on his and co-author Avner de-Shalit’s recently published work The Spirit of Cities at the end of this month, argues differently. Asked what the 352-page work is all about, he says ‘Avner de-Shalit and I argue that some cities have a particular “ethos” or “spirit” and that this is a good thing for a city to have’.

From the hidden bars of prohibition to a literary appearance in Ernest Hemingway’s 1926 classic The Sun Also Rises, in which the narrator sips it in a Paris bar, the Jack Rose has been a staple of American cocktail culture since the beginning of the 20th century. There are plenty of theories as to the drink’s origin. Some people think it’s simply named after the applejack drink that’s one of its ingredients and provides its rose-pink colour. Others say it takes its name from the Jacqueminot rose, the flower of choice in the 1920s. But the tale we prefer is that it was gambler Bald Jack Rose, one of New York’s most infamous gangland figures, who invented the drink as early as 1912. Read more

At 12,500RMB, it isn’t cheap, but for only one month of study (five days a week, 9am-6pm), it doesn’t require the long-term investment of most ‘English as a foreign language’ teaching courses.
Nothing ages faster than the new. My shiny iPad of today will sit on the pile of dead laptops in the cupboard in five years time, worth less than the materials it’s made of. The bulky handsets of cutting-edge yuppies are now antiques sniffed at by African farmers. Over every Apple store should be written: ‘All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and unto the dust return. So are you really certain you want to blow 4,000 yuan on a phone?’ Read more

It’s a man’s world. That it is, and it’s a man’s night at Upsidedown Touch, a new gay speed-dating event due to be held every week at Touch, the hotel lounge-bar at Westin Beijing Chaoyang. At the time of going to press, details were still a bit hazy, but co-organiser Marcus tells us they will be holding it on either Tuesday or Thursday nights, and for the first few weeks, two can attend for the price of one (100RMB). Doors open at 8pm, with the after-party starting from 10.30pm, where 50RMB gets you two cocktails. Organisers say it should be up-and-running by October, but check their website or slip them an email (wuptouch@gmail.com) to confirm. Read more

Halloween (Mon 31) is rapidly going the way of Christmas, as the run-up to the big day gets ever longer. But unlike Xmas, which suffers from a lack of decent parties in Beijing, All Hallows’ Eve regularly comes good.

Kicking things off is the return of old favourite the Yen Fetish Halloween Party (798, Fri 28), where PVC-clad nurses go to dance, drink and pass out. DJs Mickey Zhang, Yangbing and Eddie Lv are among the faces behind the decks, but this is a sure thing for sweaty clubbers battling rubber rashes and ball-gag cramp. Unlike Xiu’s two-night Halloween Party (Fri 28-Sat 29), which is the Park Hyatt Hotel’s altogether more civilised affair – with not a drunk teenage vampire in sight. Read more

Friday saw the long-anticipated opening of S.T.A.Y – the new restaurant by three- Michelin starred French chef Yannick Alléno – at the Shangri-La Beijing, in the space that once housed Blu Lobster.

The Shangri-La team seem to have learnt their lesson from S.T.A.Y’s predecessor, which has just closed shop after a few years of operation. When it comes to concept, Alleno’s new restaurant is at the opposite end of the spectrum from Blu Lobster’s edgy play with molecular gastronomy. As its full name, Simple Table Alléno Yannick, suggests, it’s all about going back to basics - French basics, to be precise, with classic dishes à la francaise such as foie gras, rack of lamb and pigeon headlining a menu that fits neatly onto two pages. An influence of nomadic-style food followed the Mongolian rulers of the Yuan dynasty to their palaces and during the Ming dynasty it was migrants from Shandong who ruled the city’s kitchens. Today, the locals’ albeit admirably catholic tastes in food from every corner of China has led to truly Beijing fare being sidelined amid a cornucopia of cuisines. Read more

Those on board, said to include minor royalty, were tired, hungry and cold. They headed to chef Joe Sheridan’s restaurant in the terminal. Sheridan obligingly added cream and a drop of Irish whiskey to his customers’ coffees to cheer them up. An American, perhaps feeling a little lost, asked if he was supping Brazilian coffee. ‘That’s Irish coffee,’ replied Sheridan. A classic was born.

She’s always had a bad habit of threatening to kidnap dogs, with the reasoning that the cuter they are, the more likely they are to be stray (‘Look at that puppy. He’s clearly a stray!’ ‘He’s on a lead!’). I fear the same principle will soon apply to babies, especially adorable apple-cheeked part-Western ones.
Last night, Bob Dylan played China for the first time in his countercultural career. So how was it?

Taking to the Workers’ Gymnasium stage amid reports that he was to play a pre-approved set-list, he nevertheless soon showed Beijingers inexperienced in the art of Bob live why he is such an enigma. Anyone expecting a faithful run-through of his greatest hits does not know Dylan. Opening number ‘Gonna Change My Way of Thinking’ was met with cautious applause.

While this year has already seen luxury brands pushing the envelope when it comes to wooing the Chinese consumer, Burberry is now entering the fray with guns blazing.

If it's heritage you want, Burberry goes back to 1856 and has been worn just about everywhere. From Roald Amundsen reaching the South Pole in 1911, Sir Ernest Shackleton crossing Antarctica in 1914, to Mallory's ill-fated attempt at conquering Everest in 1924 - all were kept warm thanks to Thomas Burberry. Now the brand is preparing to hit Beijing big time on April 13.

Four of them are gay, one is bisexual and five are straight, but the audience is not told which ones are which. One of the girls hates her father, telling the camera ‘My dad was an asshole.’ Another girl muses: ‘My mother always treated me like a son... so my understanding of gender difference was quite vague. Let’s head to Cuba, the land of rum, cigars and, of course, the daiquiri. But wait... this classic cocktail is thought to have been invented by a bunch of Americans working in Santiago de Cuba, in the southeast of the island, in the early 20th century. Legend has it that Jennings Cox, the general manager of the Spanish American Iron Co, ran out of gin while entertaining guests, so he used rum instead. He named his creation after the nearby iron mine, Daiquiri, and thus was born the cocktail loved by chicas the world over.
