Set in a small town near Baotou, Wang Cailing is a vocal teacher with a magnificent voice and a big dream—to be an opera singer at the National Opera House. She falls in with some other bohemians, including a young man who wants to be China's Vincent van Gogh and a ballet dancer who is past his prime. As they struggle to realise their dreams, they also strive to be accepted and understood by society.
