Boutique gym Ms Uptown
opened its doors at the end of October with the sole aim of providing a comfortable and intimate arena for ladies to exercise and relax.
With only one studio and a small workout area – complete with two treadmills and free weights – the gym is certainly compact, but for good reason: ‘to help form a really small and close-knit community and give [people] the opportunity to connect,’ explains owner Judyanna Chen. And only a couple of weeks after opening, the sense of community is already growing strong.
Ms Uptown currently concentrates on group classes with three main focus areas – yoga, dance and functional training – all of which are tailored to womens' lifestyle. Chen notes that ‘[women] don’t usually want really big biceps, we want toned arms, toned legs,’ so the classes are mainly aimed at toning, strengthening and sculpting.
The facilities at Ms Uptown feel fresh and modern, the cosy changing rooms, although without toilets (a plight of most Soho-based gyms), are clean and kitted out with two showers and a fresh pile of towels. For a post-workout chill or a quiet a place to hangout Ms Uptown has a small café – open to all genders and non-members – serving coffee (from 20RMB), fresh juices (from 25RMB) and small bites.
As part of an introductory offer, until Tuesday 15 November, you can sign up for two weeks of trial classes for 99RMB, a six-month membership with 42 percent of for 2,800RMB (usually 4,800RMB), or an annual membership with 30 percent off for 6,500RMB (usually 9,250RMB).
