Marks and Spencer to close 10 stores in China

Future of Beijing location hangs in the balance

Oh come on, Beijing! Now you're just being vindictive.


After news earlier today that the Bookworm Literary Festival is to be postponed, we've just heard that Marks & Spencer is to close 10 stores in China.

The Guardian reports that the British chain will shut loss-making stores in ten markets worldwide and cut 2,100 jobs. The 53 closures include ten in China.

It's not yet confirmed if this includes the Beijing store in The Place, which only opened last December, but we have a bad feeling. The place isn't exactly heaving, and a business can't survive on the profits from our crumpet addiction alone.
