1. Beijing Past & Present Design Competition limited edition gift shop

Our design competition Beijing Past and Present produced some phenomenal designs from emerging graphic designers throughout China. With over 700 entrants, it was a tough decision for judges Daniel Meller of CreativCulture.com; Eric Shya, fashion editor of Time Out Beijing (Chinese edition); and our very own shopping and style editor Alice McInerney. The top three entrants have had their winning designs printed on T-shirts and tote bags, and these will be sold as unique gifts in our exclusive pop-up shop. Now meet the winners…

First place
Xin Guo, China
Profession Exhibition designer
Design ‘Change on the Wheel’
What was your inspiration? I identify topics through a very natural thought process. Because I’ve grown up in an evolving Beijing, I see the past and present reflected in my own personal development.
What does your design mean to you? Happiness. I am not good with words – the structure of my design is a way through which I can express myself.

Second place
S Tien Hsiang Chow, Canada
Profession Urbanist
Design ‘Single Line Beijing Doodle’
What was your inspiration? The north-south axis of Beijing. I like graphics to be simple, subtle and ironic.
What does your design mean to you? Imagination and possibilities.

Third place
Chipsou, France
Profession Freelance illustrator, graphic designer
Design ‘Yoghurt Star’
What was your inspiration? Travel, my childhood, The Little Prince, Manga, Studio Ghibli animation, expressionism, the music in my earphones...
What does your design mean to you? It’s a travel memory. Street yoghurt was the coolest thing I saw in Beijing when I was here in 2010. It’s such a vintage thing.

4. Launch of online fashion boutique AnyWearStyle.com

Fashion website AnyWearStyle.com is launching its online boutique AnyShopStyle.com exclusively at Beijing Design Week. To kick off proceedings, it has brought the latest collection from London-based surrealist designer Yang Du. As well as ogling Yang’s zany designs, you will also have the opportunity to order a large selection of other designers’ clothes from the online store.

5. Showroom of Dongliang Studio’s new A/W ‘11 collections

Dong Liang Studio has long been a go-to destination for those seeking a boutique break from big-name stores. It will also be making an appearance in Dashilar with a showroom featuring some of the best in Chinese design, including clothes from Fan Ran, Manchit Au and Guan Zhe. We can’t wait.

6. Exclusive China launch of UK retail giant Topshop and showcase of further Topman collections, in collaboration with Fei Space

Fei Space and the launch of Topshop China
Beijing boutique Fei Space is collaborating with British fashion behemoth Topshop to present a designer retrospective exhibition to commemorate Topshop’s first foray onto Mainland soil. With around 300 stores across the UK and more than 100 more overseas from America to Asia, it was about time Topshop came to conquer China. The retailer’s past collaborations with designers will be displayed in this unique exhibition, with selected items available to buy. Pieces on show include designs from Mary Katrantzou, David Koma, Emma Cook, Ashish and Meadham Kirchhoff. Fei Space will also be flying the flag for Britain with collections from House of Holland, Jonathan Saunders, Marios Schwab – plus Christopher Raeburn, for whom this will be a first foray into china.

Topman pop-up shop
While Topman launched a few collections last month at Fei, you can expect even more on offer at Beijing Design Week, through its unique pop-up shop. Over recent years, Topman has collaborated with young designers including Kim Jones, Markus Lupfer and Peter Jensen as well as launching its own premium labels, so we look forward to seeing what’s in store.

7. Jason Chu sound station and art installation

Hip-hop/spoken word artist Jason Chu will be launching his new project, THE UNCOOL, at Time Out Beijing’s pop-up shop. In this project, Jason explores love and hurt in a world where joy and cynicism, futility and simplicity battle to be heard. You will have a chance to listen to his music and read Jason's commentary at listening stations set up in the lounge area throughout the entire event. Please also join us at the Time Out Beijing October 1st Party, which will include THE UNCOOL listening/launch party from 5pm to 8pm on Saturday 1 October to celebrate and enjoy thought-provoking hip-hop. Don't miss it!

Time Out Beijing is looking for volunteers to help out at our fashion pop-up shop.
