Improvisational artists have something of a timeless qualityabout them. They remind us why music should be made in the first place – to express sentiments that can’t be put into words and to make sense of our desire to create something out of nothing. Experimental musician Wei Wei (better known as Vavabond) demonstrates all of the above with her latest release, Hologram of Sea.
Basically, this is 50 minutes of ocean waves and static drones, with all the sounds recorded on a beach in a seaside town in Zhejiang Province. And while the concept of jamming with atmospheric sound isn’t new, works like Hologram of Sea change how this music should be consumed.
Put it on as a casual listener and we guarantee you a nice sleep within two minutes, but position yourself in the environment and build your own world using her sounds and you will get something entirely different out of it. It’s not new, but it is clever.
