Mr Graceless are one of the more notable graduates of D-22’s ‘University Night’ series, which invited college bands from Beijing’s student-packed Wudaokou to play every Wednesday. Rather aptly, as D-22 closes for good, the three-piece finally release their debut album on Maybe Mars Records (out Friday 17) – and it’s worth the wait.
Founded in 2009, in the basement of Beijing Jiaotong University, Mr Graceless stand out from the Wu’s many noise-heavy, experimental acts with their bright, catchy indie rock. Tracks such as ‘My Chanel’ and ‘Her Face’ boast a sing-a-long, summery vibe that brings to mind early Blur.
The usual Sonic Youth influence is evident here and there, as volatile percussion and penetrating reverb echo throughout efforts such as ‘New Song’. The flaws are obvious too, though, as similar guitar hooks blur into one. But this is their debut, after all, and these college graduates are certainly on their way to something bigger.
