Delia

A fabulously eclectic mix of new and old, local and foreign, designer and unknown – owners Jessie Li and Lau Jiu Fai curate this exquisite vintage boutique on Wudaoying like the bosses they are. Sourcing pieces from regular trips to Europe and Japan, Li and Lau have ensured that at Delia you’ll find impossible-to-duplicate items like gently loved German glasses frames from the ’70s or an exceptionally vibrant red cape from the ’60s, possibly from Wales or Scotland – somewhere with great wool.

Quality is high and prices start low at 150RMB, with vintage designer pieces going for 1,000RMB and above. Read more

Mega

241 Gulou Dong Dajie, Dongcheng district See full address details

The grandfather of Beijing’s vintage scene, Mega remains one of the city’s best bets for a consistently good find. You might know it better as ‘Mega Mega Vintage’, from before last spring when owner Liu Ke rebranded and painted the storefront cream over its original bright red. Rebranding aside, the goods are still the same.

Liu continues to match our expectations of solid variety and top quality for a reasonable price tag. You can generally nab something for a couple of hundred RMB, and there’s a strong showing in the shoes and accessories departments as well as clothing. Read more

Chichi and Roro Vintage

Cuter than a vintage button that you might find on the shelves, proprietor Chichi Lee is one class act with an eye for details. His cosy Wudaoying shop, co-managed with wife and in-house designer Roro, features some truly superlative vintage accessories and clothing, like a selection of ’70s Ralph Lauren purses or a Kansai Yamamoto handkerchief (a favourite of Mr Stardust himself, David Bowie).

Pricing is similar to other vintage spots in the area, starting around 150RMB to upwards of 1,000RMB for designer items. Up your fashion ante with this perfect little trove of finishing touches. Read more

Nostalgia

161 Andingmennei Dajie, Dongcheng district See full address details

We can’t help but swoon over the decked-out digs of vintage clothiers Nostalgia. Rack upon rack of smart togs await you at this emporium of previously loved attire.

Can’t find a price tag? That’s how they roll! Ask the brother-and-sister sales clerks who run the store to see how generous they’re feeling that day. When we visited, sweaters were around 300RMB; dresses from 500RMB. Read more

House of Willow

First Floor, Sanlitun North Building 26, Xingfusancun Wuxiang, Sanlitun Lu, Chaoyang district See full address details

Pull out your wallets (or better yet, your beau’s), because you’re going to want pretty much everything here. Fact. House of Willow is dedicated to everything old and shiny – the majority of the shop is filled with jewellery, although there’s a rack of vintage designer brand clothes and other accessories.

Prices start at 400RMB and quickly rise, but you can be confident in their authenticity. Owners Karen Leung and Xing Jiaming carefully source all manner of glittering vintage baubles from US and European auction houses. Even when we don’t have a spare couple of thousand RMB, we find ourselves stopping by just to ogle at the glorious pieces. Read more

Trash 'n' diamond

32 Baiziwan Lu, 22 Art Street, Chaoyang district See full address details

With brands ranging from H&M to MaxMara, Trash 'n' Diamond is a second-hand store whose concept differentiates itself from the city's array of vintage shops. This Shuangjing boutique both buys and sells used clothing and stocks styles that appeal to the masses rather than just Gulou's hipsters.

For anyone, Trash 'n' Diamond proves a fun Saturday spent shuffling hangers. Priced primarily around 100RMB, clothes flip fast and Trash 'n' Diamond requires repeat visits to check out the revolving stock. Read more
