Figure out if you have enough time to leave the airport.
Take into consideration the distance to the points of interest you most want to see. Some airports are only ten minutes away from the city centre by public transportation, but other sites (such as visiting the pyramids in Egypt) will take up to an hour each way. Factor in traffic, time to get through customs and security, as well as currency exchange and unexpected delays.

What if you don’t have enough time to leave the airport?
Most international airports have plenty of hidden treasures to keep you busy. It is now standard for larger airports to offer shopping, restaurants, internet access etc. But many now provide some truly unique attractions, such as aquariums, golf courses, swimming pools, fitness facilities, casinos and more.

If you do have time to leave the airport…
Check with your airline to see if your ticket permits you to leave the transit area and check to see if you need a visa. While many countries allow visitors in for short periods of time without visas, the rules vary depending on the specific country and your country of origin. Also, some airports charge a departure fee, so keep that in mind.

Think about the logistics of leaving the airport.
If you are unable to check your luggage through to your final destination, many airports offer left luggage facilities or lockers, usually in the arrivals hall. If baggage storage is not available, a hotel room near the airport is an option to secure your luggage. Upon escaping the airport, public transport is always the cheaper alternative, but the advantage of taxis is that the drivers will often help direct you to some great places to see within your allotted time.

Where to go and what to see?
Take time beforehand, if possible, to determine what sights you’re most excited to see. Just make sure to pad your adventures with plenty of time on both ends so that you can ensure you catch your flight.
