Beijing subway: the low-down

Cheap, extensive, fast: the city's subway system is worth familiarising yourself with.
Beijing subway: the low-down

Look out for the big blue signs with 'Beijing Subway' written in Chinese and English next to a white D with a circle around it. Inside announcements, subway maps and station names are in Chinese and English. Navigating your way underground is not difficult but be prepared to battle with the crowds during rush hours and especially at interchange stations.

Tickets cost 2RMB and can be bought from ticket office windows or touch-screen ticket machines. The machines can seem daunting but currently selecting any destination has the same result. Insert coins or a 10 or 20RMB note, select any destination station then the big green tick to receive your ticket and change.
