It’s easy to be cynical about bars that appear to lean heavily towards gimmicks, but the latest venture from the cocktail pros at The Black Moth manages to expertly balance eye-catching – and frankly, fun – design with an eclectic menu of craft cocktails.

Deriving inspiration from its namesake, The Vending Machine features a striking wall of vending machines that mask a secret entrance to the bar’s inner sanctum. Inside, the initially unassuming bar transforms into a veritable cave of wonders, tricked out in a dizzying array of neon lights, Plastered 8 artwork, plus fully operational arcade machines equipped with ready-to-play retro classics. If that sounds like there’s a lot going on, that would be because there is. Even the drinks veer slightly left field, with a menu based around draft cocktails. With concoctions such as Eucalyptus Fizz and Macadamia Nut Milk, these pre-batched mixes (all coming in at a reasonable 68RMB) help The Vending Machine’s bartenders serve large quantities of cocktails while still being able to focus on more bespoke creations. Is this the future of bartending? Who knows. The Vending Machine certainly isn’t playing around, even if we were.
