When Dada burst on to the scene in summer 2012 it was an immediate game changer, and it’s gone from strength to strength ever since. Nowhere else comes close to replicating Dada’s eclectic programming. From drum ’n’ bass to skweee, psytrance, cold wave and more, the club has become a home for anything alternative and electronic in the city.
Plus, its credibility has meant that performers who might have skipped Beijing on their way to Shanghai in the past are now adding our city to their Asia tours.
Finally, the commitment to keeping prices low – free entry on local nights and a minimal cover for international acts – and involvement in the local area through its weekly cinema nights, vintage markets and more, is to be applauded. Here’s to Dada, the newly-crowned, converse-wearing king of Gulou.
