Yugong Yishan takes the top spot for its excellent programming and support of local acts. The venue’s size gives it the clout to pull in the bigger names, but Yugong’s commitment to the local scene never wanes. Its varied programming over the last year, showcasing international acts in genres as diverse as punk (Gang of Four) and hip-hop (Madlib), is head and shoulders above the competition; and it’s just as open-minded with its local bookings. What’s more, the quick, professional bar staff and reasonably-priced drinks mean that even the rare mediocre booking needn’t be suffered sober. Yugong also wins the prize for Beijing’s most rock ’n’ roll bathroom – but that’s another story.
