Tucked away down a lantern-lined alleyway off Gulou Dong Dajie, Amilal is the archetypal hidden hutong gem.
A small, ramshackle courtyard with bags of character, Amilal is the kind of secret spot you don’t want to share lest you spoil its mystique (er, so we apologise to its other regulars).
Hodgepodge antique furniture, original architectural features and the occasional impromptu jam on traditional Chinese instruments from regulars make Amilal stand out from the generic crowd. Patrons huddle around small tables, engaged in hushed conversations and sipping on the wide selection of whisky – somehow all priced at 50RMB, even the rarer bottles.
If a friend comes to town and wants to see a hutong bar, this is where you take them – it really is the most charming little boozer.
