Taking over the former Tavalin Bagels stall near Yashow Market is Andy’s Craft Sausages. This is the first bricks-and-mortar spot for the artisanal sausage maker who has been plying his trade at pop-up events and by special order until now. The new space offers breakfast bagels made with egg, sausage or ham (39-42RMB); lox sandwiches (45RMB) and the signature handcrafted wieners, namely Andy’s Cheese Bratwurst(30RMB) – made with a traditional Beijing cheese – and the Spicy Italian (30RMB).
What started as a hobby for American expat Andy Horowitz in 2012 quickly grew into a reliable source for quality, homemade sausages that are free of chemical preservatives, using only pork shoulder meat and hog casings.
We tried the sausage and egg combo (39RMB) that comes with
either a rosemary, onion or sesame bagel. However, we were saddened to find the cook nuking our egg in a plastic container in the microwave above the hot plate where she was cooking our sausage patty. Everything was then topped off with two cold slices of Swiss cheese. The bratwurst had plenty of local cheese but its bland taste could have done with a bit more kick. The same need for zest goes for the spicy Italian sausage.
We weren’t overly impressed by Andy’s new stall, but we know from past experience that the man can turn out some good sausages. For the Sanlitun breakfast crowd, hopefully things will improve after the soft opening.
