A new incarnation of Gulou's beloved Mao Livehouse rises? Well, that’s what you might assume given the name, but this 800-capacity kraken is in fact the contentious spawn of Shijilemeng – the company who already run five successful Mao branches across China, including a respected Shanghai outlet.
Despite the long-picked bones over the use of the Mao Livehouse name, Li Chi, founder of the iconic Gulou venue that formed such an important pillar of the Beijing underground scene over the last decade, is said to be positive about this venue offering new opportunities to the scene.
Mao Wukesong’s larger capacity and more sterile setting certainly promise a different live experience, but with cashed-up backers and high-end rigging, it’s still likely to be a mean spot for a show. Mao Livehouse est mort; vive le Mao Livehouse? We shall see.
