22 Beixinqiaosantiao

This venue has closed.

Risen from the ashes, Moxi Moxi have relocated from their bricked-up Fangjia space to their new Beixinqiao location. They're still rocking it though, serving up Israeli street stall staples that are the foundation of drunken late nights in the Holy Land.

The gregarious owner-operator pair do it all: taking orders, clearing tables and serving up renditions of classics from their homeland – which means that things in the kitchen can really get bogged down when the hungry throngs descend in the late evening.

At present, the menu consists of two stuffed pita options: the classic sabich (25RMB) – fried aubergine, chopped tomato, pickled cucumber, hard-boiled egg, fried cauliflower, hummus and tahini – or the chicken schnitzel (35RMB), which, much like the sabich, comes with liberal amounts of tahini and a salad of chopped lettuce, tomato and cucumber. The flavours are light and fresh, in spite of the oil from frying – which makes it just that much more delicious. The sabich is smooth and a bit of a hot mess to eat, with each bite bringing something different to the party. The schnitzel is far more manageable, but the meat could use just a little more spice.

The speed of the service unfortunately renders much of the food tepid at best, but the flavours more than make up for it, not to mention the price. We hear a larger weekend menu is in the works plus hot sides and salads, all of which make a return visit worthwhile. We wouldn’t bet against seeing Moxi Moxi 2 in Sanlitun before the year’s out.
