The ten exhibition halls of the Museum of Classic Books beautifully present all sorts of ancient scripts, bindings and artefacts that recall the literary history of a nation. As you might expect of a place housed inside China’s biggest collection of books, exhibits are almost entirely in Chinese, but there’s enough to keep the Mandarin illiterati intrigued, from ancient inscriptions on rocks to manuscripts from famous authors such as Lu Xun, as well as a giant ancient map of Beijing.
Don’t miss The handwritten letters from Karl Marx in the communist text exhibition.
Estimated time One hour.
English provisions All in Chinese; an English guide to the complex’s layout is available.
